1.What is LASIK  Laser Vision Correction?

LASIK  Laser Vision Correction is the most advanced procedure for correction of refractive errors utilizing the Excimer laser. It combines the use of the microkeratome to create a thin protective corneal flap followed by application of the Excimer laser beam to the bed of the cornea. The flap is then placed back in position and allowed to heal. The advantage of LASIK laser vision correction  is that there are no open surfaces left to heal after surgery.

2.Is LASIK  Laser Vision Correction surgery painful?

Most laser vision correction surgery patients note that postoperatively they have no pain. However, during the LASIK procedure the lid speculum that holds the eye open can cause some discomfort. Also, when making the flap, the suction ring will produce a pressure sensation that some patients describe as uncomfortable. For the most part, there is really no discomfort because the eye is anesthetized prior to the laser vision correction procedure. Once the anesthesia wears off, any discomfort is minimal.

3.How long does the LASIK  Laser Vision Correction procedure take?

The length of time at the center is usually between 2-4 hours. However, the LASIK laser vision correction procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes in the operating room. The actual laser time is approximately 1 minute.

4. When can I resume my normal activities after LASIK  Laser Vision Correction?

If you rest for 1-2 hours at home after your LASIK laser vision correction procedure, you will notice an immediate change in your vision. 98% to 99% of our patient population have legal driving vision the day after surgery. However, it is advised that patients take it easy for 2-3 days following surgery.

5. What, if any, side effects will I notice after LASIK  Laser Vision Correction?

Most everyone will experience glare and halos in the immediate postoperative period. It is rare that these side effects persist longer than 2-6 weeks. Some patients may not achieve their expected uncorrected visual outcome. If this is related to an under-correction or over-correction, you may be a candidate for an enhancement of the original laser vision correction procedure. Although all potential risks and benefits will be thoroughly discussed with you prior to your laser vision correction procedure, you may have side effects specifically related to you and your refractive error. We encourage you to write down your questions and give us any potential medical history that you think may influence your surgery (i.e. allergies, medicines, medical or family related disease processes, etc). Although complications and side effects have a low incidence, it is important to realize that this is a surgical procedure with associated risks.

6. What if I move my eye during LASIK  Laser Vision Correction?

The technology associated with laser vision correction is such as to build in safety measures. Throughout the procedure, the surgeon is observing your eye and tracking your eye movements through the microscope. With any large deviations, the surgeon will simply stop the laser ablation and restart the process when the eye is perfectly aligned. Although eye movement is a concern of many patients, those who have experienced the LASIK laser vision correction procedure rarely note a problem maintaining fixation throughout the short laser ablation.

7. Is LASIK  Laser Vision Correction  permanent?

LASIK Laser vision correction has only been performed for about ten years. Presently, the procedure appears to be permanent with regard to distance vision correction. However, the eye can change throughout life. The main change that occurs with aging is associated with reading vision. This will be discussed during the consultation process as it applies to you and your specific refractive error and age.

8. What is the cost of LASIK  Laser Vision Correction?

Depending on our recommendations, the cost per eye can vary. The options will be discussed at your consultation. We have multiple payment options that are available that make refractive surgery affordable.

9. What can I expect the day of my LASIK  Laser Vision Correction surgery?

As mentioned, you will be at the Eye Center for 2-4 hours. Many of the tests previously performed may be repeated the day of your surgery, especially if you recently discontinued wearing your contact lens. We repeat these tests to help ensure accuracy and predictability so don’t be concerned if some of the tests are repeated several times preoperatively. Once your testing is completed and after your consent forms are signed, you will be taken to the preoperative area. In this area you are given your postoperative instructions and medication to relax you. Next you will undergo the surgical procedure itself. Following a short postoperative period, you will be allowed to return home. Please advise your sponsor who will bring you and take you home that you will be at the Eye Center for 2-4 hours.

Although all of your questions may not have been previously answered, please feel free to write them down and ask them on the day of your consultation or the day of your surgery. An educated patient knows what to expect and will find the LASIK laser vision correction procedure less intimidating. It is our goal to make you as comfortable as possible and alleviate any of your fears.
