"Trust Your Eyes To Experience" Retina and Vitreous John D. Matthews, MD is a retina specialist and joined Southeastern Eye Center in 1985, six months after it opened. He and his wife, Carol, have three children and live in Greensboro. Dr. Matthews received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 1979. He completed his internship in1980 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His residency in Ophthalmology was at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond from 1980 through 1983. His two years of fellowship in Vitreoretinal surgery and ophthalmic research was at Harvard Medical School with The Retina Associates in Boston, Massachusetts and the Eye Research Institute of The Retina Foundation with Dr. Charles Schepens, a pioneer in retinal detachment surgery. During his fellowship, in addition to gaining experience in retinal laser and surgery, he participated in the N.I.H. study: the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study. Dr. Matthews has been certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1983. He is a Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Schepens' International Retina Society, The International College of Surgeons, The North Carolina Medical Society, The Guilford County Medical Society, The Vitreous Society and several other organizations.
